Food as Medicine - Cherry Juice - Jessica Grelle

- Here's some guidance for your workouts from Food Scientist Jessica Grelle:
"Tart Cherry Concentrate is one of my favorite 'food as medicine' recommendations for its anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that tart cherries exhibit effects similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. While some of the research is still emerging,

I want to be upfront that much of what I hear is anecdotal as well.
Notably, most of the studied benefits associated with tart cherries involved participants taking 1-2 oz. of tart cherry concentrate daily in water.

Tart cherries boast high levels of flavonoids, plant compounds that combat oxidative stress. Among these, anthocyanin and quercetin are powerful agents against inflammatory pathways. Tart cherries have a very high ORAC value (a measure of antioxidants) - the juice concentrate surpasses Acai or Pomegranate.

Additionally, tart cherries contain a small amount of melatonin, potentially useful before bedtime for better sleep. They are also beneficial for individuals dealing with gout and kidney stones.

Numerous ongoing studies are attempting to establish connections between tart cherries and athletic performance and muscle recovery. Currently, only one study on marathon runners has yielded promising results.

I personally use 1oz of concentrate in a smoothie a couple of times a week. Delish!"
